Galvanised and Driveway Gates

You will need

A spanner (size depends on gate size) spirit level, sand and cement or post mix. Digging tools and at least two people when hanging the gate.
If attaching the posts to a wall refer to the wall fixings instructions and go straight to no 2 below.

1. Installing the hinge post.

(If wall fixing your posts refer to the wall fixing instructions and go to no. 2)
The post from which the gate hangs needs to be very well secured, dig a hole at least three times the size of the post and use plenty of cement.
A little tip: There is an element of flex in steel posts, to accommodate this we recommend leaning the hanging post very slightly back to accommodate the weight of the gate, for gates over 1.2m wide set the post so the spirit level bubble is between the centre point and indicator line. For gates over 2m wide or more the bubble can be just touching the indicator line. (See photo).
Cement the hanging post in position ensuring that the height is correct and it is facing the right way. The hinge brackets should
be facing you as the gate opens towards you, they should not be facing the opposite closure post. We recommend a clearance between the gate and ground of at least 35mm. The hinges are set up so the top of the gate is level with the bottom of the post cap. Marking the post where the bottom of the gate will come to will help indicate the post depth when cementing. See the installed gate example on the next page. Do a final check on both sides of the posts with a spirit level before leaving the concrete to set.

2. Hanging the gate

Ensure the concrete is completely set before attempting to hang the gate.

Remove just the outer nuts and washers on the hinge brackets (attached to the post) leaving the inner nut and washer on. With at least two people offer the gate up to the hinges so the threaded section passed through the slot on the gate hinge. While the gate is being supported attach with the washer and nuts and tighten. To adjust the hinges please see step 3.

3. Hinge adjustment

Ensure you have someone to help you support the gate for safety and prevent sudden movement of the gate or hinges. Adjust the hinges if necessary to obtain the best gate position and ensure it is level.
The hinges are adjustable in three ways.
Firstly by tightening / loosening the nuts holding the hinge plate to move the gate to and away from the post along the threaded hinge bolt, this will also change the level of the gate depending on how the top and bottom hinges are adjusted. There is adjustment to have the gate as close as 10mm from the post and over 50mm. Ideally aim for around a 15mm gap it’s nice and close so you don’t loose privacy and is about the same as the gap you want to try and achieve between the closure post and gate.
Secondly, gate leaning angle can be adjusted using the long hole on the hinge plate to allow the threaded rod to travel along it. Loosening the hinge plate nuts will allow this movement. Loosen the nuts slowly to avoid sudden movement.
Lastly, the washers on the hinge pin can be swapped around on either side of the loop, this adjusts the gate height slightly. The gate will need to be removed in order to do this. This is a minor adjustment and not often necessary.
For aesthetics some of the excess thread protruding through the gate hinge bracket can be trimmed off with an angle grinder, leave some spare for adjustments later.

4. Setting the closure post

(Not applicable with a pair of gates in this case both are the hinge posts).

If wall fixing refer the wall fixing instructions.
With the hinge gate hung and any hinge adjustments made, you have a clear indication where the closure post should be.
The gap between the closure post and gate is flexible providing the latch protrudes at least halfway across the post. Ensure the closure post is the correct height so the latch sits level within the catcher.
Concrete the closure post in position.

5. Setting drop down bolt tubes or gate stop, gate pair / automated gates only

On gate pairs 4 metal tubes are supplied to receive the drop down bolts, two are for the open and two for the closed position. These should be set in concrete.
Gate stops are provided for automated gates. These should also be set in concrete to receive the gates in the fully closed position.

6. Ongoing maintenance

A drop of oil on the hinges and latch now and again will keep things moving freely. Adjustments to the hinges can be made as explained in no 3 above.
